A small sample size, perhaps, but a recent survey of 263 American consumers found that Google is still the top search engine, leading amongst both traditional Search services as well as against AI chatbots that appear to be gaining more and more Search traction.

The survey, conducted by New Street Research, showed Google as the default setting for users of both iOS (81%) and Android (71%), according to MediaPost’s coverage. Behind it were DuckDuckGo (9% overall), Yahoo (6%), and Bing (4%).

Noting the “highly competitive adoption rates” of genAI as a Search tool, MediaPost says “it will become more important for brands to carefully consider the platforms to best place ads and content,” particularly with New Street Research’s deeper dive into purchasing trends.

Almost three-quarters (73.8%) of males have used AI in the past month to help research before a purchase decision, compared to less than half (44.7%) of females.

“When asked to cite which chatbots were used on a mobile phone in the past 30 days by operating system, 48% overall cited ChatGPT, while 54% of users cited iPhone, and 32% cited Android,” MediaPost shared.

No doubt the upcoming holidays will provide more opportunities for shoppers and surveyors alike. With the rate that genAI is growing, who knows what Search numbers might flip (or share-grips might slip) in 2025?
